I have finally fulfilled my dream of having a dance photo shoot on the street and in Atlanta at that. This experience was so fun and in the process I discovered I have an alter ego. I don’t know her name yet but I am glad to have met her. She is fun, adventurous, and sultry when she wants to be. I think dance photo shoots are a must have for any dancer. They really will help you find your strengths and make you realize your true potential. It is recommended that for a dance photo shoot you have someone who specializes in photographing dance or is in the field of dance. This will help you create the best lines and shapes for your photos. I had the pleasure and opportunity to work with a very talented friend of mine, Alexandra Newkirk. She is a dancer, hair stylist, make-up artist, and of course a photographer. We both took advantage of this opportunity as a way to gain more experience; me with being in front of the camera, and her with being behind it. A WIN WIN! The best thing to remember is to NOT compare yourself to others in photos you may have seen. You want to highlight your strengths, including your poses, hair, clothes, and shoes. Here are 5 tips to help you prepare for a photo shoot:

  1. Have an idea of what kind of shoot (theme) you want and begin looking at/thinking of poses

  2. Pick some venues that have proper backgrounds (studio/site specific)

  3. Communicate with your photographer on what you want and what they see for you, artistically

  4. Think about what your hair and makeup will look like and practice your faces and angles

  5. Practice your poses prior to the shoot because you most likely wont have the luxury of a mirror

Here is a sneak peek of some of the pictures that were taken. More to come soon 😉!
